Who's Who in Bell Street?

Steve Keates - Percussion

 

Steve originally studied music and piano from the age of 8 in Salisbury at The Cathedral School and continued in Plymouth, where he moved onto percussion. Having become hooked on Traditional Jazz through Ken Colyer, he changed to kit drumming and Jazz, but not before he had played in a competition Silver Band and a Highland Band. He then continued playing in the Frank Swainson Band, The Ken Arthur Band, The Solent City Jazz Band and Deliberate Strangers before meeting Richard Lonnon to form the Bell Street Jazz band. He plays a range of percussive instruments, including the Wash Board!

 

Richard Lonnon - Trombone, Vocals and Harmonica

 

Richard leads the band and plays trombone, blues harmonica and is the lead vocalist. He has played nationally and internationally with the Arthur Browne Band, Intercity Jazz Band, Bennetts Jazz Band and The Hat Box Orchestra. Richard is well known with fans of Bell Street for his exciting dance routines and amazing eyebrow shaking!

Luke Thorne - Trumpet & Flugel Horn

 

Luke started playing the cornet at the age of 8 with Shaftesbury Town Band. He joined Swing Bin & the Liners at 13 and quickly moved to trumpet, where he progressed to be section leader by the age of 15. He formed his own band, Blew and wrote numerous compositions for it, one of which won a national music competition. Luke then moved to Brighton at 21 to pursue a professional music career. He became 1st trumpet for the Sussex Jazz Orchestra, led by Ian Hamer, a notable jazz trumpet player and regular sideman for Tubby Hayes. Luke also played in the soul band; The Rhythm Method and a modern/hard bop jazz quintet before joining Bell Street in 2008.

 

Mike Sims - Banjo

 

Mike initially started playing the tenor banjo with the Avon Valley Jazz Band and then the Wessex Jazz Band. He then joined a New Orleans quartet called 4x4 Jazz Band for several years before joining Bell Street.
